The engineering field is evolving rapidly, driven by digitalisation, decarbonisation and innovation across the entire subsurface lifecycle. Integrated surface logging with subsurface data, scaling management, reservoir surveillance and real-time digital oil field concepts are transforming drilling, production and field operations, enabling smarter, more data-driven decisions through integrated modelling and automation.
Engineers are also leading advances in carbon capture and reservoir management, from CO₂-EOR and CCUS to injection, conformance control and water shutoff strategies, while addressing decommissioning considerations already at project start-up. These developments connect traditional petroleum engineering expertise with emerging low-carbon energy systems and long-term asset stewardship.
These topics, together with integrated project maturation workflows where process engineers meet petroleum engineers and geoscience and engineering converge, will take centre stage in the Engineering Theatre at the EAGE Annual Conference in Aberdeen in 2026.

Surveillance data is gathered at different resolutions from field wide seismic, in well PLTs to ion analysis from topsides water samples. Using this data in isolation can often lead to missing the big picture, poor decisions and outcomes. Integrating all the data and discussing across all the disciplines unlocks maximum value from the surveillance. - Scaling:

- Water Shut-Offs and Injection Conformance
Mature oilfields often struggle with produced water management issues – at the reservoir, well and facilities levels. This can be due to inadequate reservoir voidage replacement, wells requiring artificial lift, process system capacity constraints, and production chemistry complications related to water production. Downhole water shut-offs can offer efficient solutions to these problems. Addressing water injector “conformance” can be equally valuable, controlling the water “at source” and improving reservoir sweep efficiency. - Developing Projects at Pace through Integration Excellence
Project value can be created by reducing the cycle time to first oil and this requires excellent early integration across multi-disciplines and timely decision making. Integrating brownfield projects into a producing asset brings more challenges to manage a complex interface. Getting this wrong can lead to big delays and value destruction. - Process Engineering meets Petroleum Engineering
Petroleum engineers regularly interface with completion engineers, reservoir engineers, production chemistry, and geoscientists when grappling with well productivity problems. However, sometimes the most critical interface can be with Process Engineering colleagues. Integration of these disciplines can unlock hidden solutions, turning complex production challenges into success stories.
